A much-loved cafe on the north Norfolk coast is to close.

But Mel Benns, who has run Henry's Coffee Shop and Kitchen in Cromer since March 2020, said it was the start of a new chapter for the venue, which would become a bistro.

Ms Benns is selling the Church Street cafe to Matt Gibson, who has been a chef for 25 years and plans to reopen it as Gibson’s Bistro.

Ms Benns, who lives in Costessey, said: “When I took over we went straight into lockdown. I’ve worked really hard although it has been difficult to build the business back up.

“We’ve got a good following and lots of great customers, but sometimes you think ‘now it’s time to move on’.

“I’m really glad someone else is going to take over.”

Ms Benns had redecorated and installed new loos in the venue before it was able to reopen following the third national lockdown in May 2021.

She said: “Our homemade cakes, amazing scones and menu have been welcomed, and we’ve been delighted that we’ve so many amazing local and returning holidaymakers to have supported us during the past two years.

“But, sadly I’ve made a decision to sell Henry’s.

“But the good news is, we have a new owner who will take over from May 1, although they are planning a few changes so will be closed for a couple of weeks.

“As you all know the team at Henry’s are amazing, and they will be transferring to the new owners.

“I’m now delighted that Henry’s has a new owner and I hope you will continue to support them.”

Ms Benns said she had always worked in hospitality and would continue to do so, and would return to event management.

But she would remain a familiar face around Cromer, which she calls “her favourite place in the world” and has a holiday caravan.
