The signs are lit, the shelves have been stacked and the team members’ faces are beaming.

Almost three years after Holt’s only supermarket burned to the ground following an electrical fault, its replacement is finally ready to throw open its doors. 

Queues of eager shoppers are expected when the Kerridge Way supermarket reopens on Thursday at 10am.

Sandra Taylor-Meeds, store manager, said she was thrilled the new branch was ready to go. She said: “We are thrilled to be opening our new grocery store and can’t wait to start serving the people of Holt in our new surroundings.

“This shop has been such an important asset for the residents here and the launch of this new building is sure to make a real difference.”

Following the blaze - in which no-one was hurt - a temporary Budgens supermarket was set up in the Kerridge Way car park.

The permanent branch, built on the footprint of the former store, was originally intended to open in December 2021.

Carl Milton, managing director of supermarket owners, the CT Baker Group, said: “Following the fire, it was only right and appropriate to take the opportunity to pause and ensure we delivered a store for our community and our wider customers, for today but also for tomorrow.

"Therefore, it was necessary to deliver a store that was comfortable, has a familiar feel and represents our longstanding values of supporting local people and producers.

“I hope our customers are delighted with what they see in the new store.”

The supermarket will include self-serve checkouts, refill stations and a new loyalty scheme.

School children, groups and local artists have created a set of murals that will go on display inside the store.

The first 1,000 customers will get a £30 goody bag and the chance to have their shopping paid for.
