A special screening of a classic Christmas movie will be introduced by a ‘live’ flashback reminder of its American air ace star in Sheringham.

It’s a Wonderful Life, the 1946 film which stars James Stewart, has become a festive must-watch for many families.

North Norfolk News:

The story follows the life of George Bailey, who questions whether his family would be better off without him after company money goes missing on Christmas Eve.

But visiting angel Clarence shows him how much is valued by his loved ones.

The film will be shown at Sheringham Little Theatre on Sunday, December 4

Greg Powles, an actor and writer from Foulsham, near Dereham, will set the scene beforehand in character as Jimmy Stewart.

Mr Powles will talk about the film and its star actor, who was also a United States Air Force bomber pilot based in Tibenham and Old Buckenham in Norfolk in the Second World War.

Mr Powles said: “The film conveys a heartfelt message about the importance of placing others before yourself.

“It reminds us that however bad times may feel, no-one is ever alone and no situation is ever irretrievable.

North Norfolk News:

“It has one of the best endings ever placed on film.

“When I’ve done these nights before, they always end with tears, hugs and huge smiles; often from hardened types - usually male -  who came in looking bored and disinterested. It’s magical.”

Mr Powles portraying Stewart around 30 years ago, following a chance remark.

He said: “I was working behind the bar at a pub in Lenwade when some customers remarked how much I looked like Jimmy Stewart.

“So one day I dressed up as him and went to work in character.

“He is my favourite actor, bringing a more subtle, naturalistic, style of acting.

“I also love that he was a genuinely nice guy, who never acted like a star and always treated every member of the cast and crew as equally important.”

Mr Powles’ portrayal led to him introducing the film for WIs and local history groups.

After spells as presenter at North Norfolk Radio and BBC Radio Norfolk, he is now a writer-performer doing storytelling and community theatre ranging from Shakespeare to variety shows.
