Atmosphere of the 1940s wartime years set to be recreated at north Norfolk retreat
A backpackers retreat along the north Norfolk coast is set to step back in time to the 1940s by transforming itself into an army camp.
With the help of 1st Airborne Div Provost Company LHG and reenactor friends, Deepdale Backpackers and Camping are putting on a special VE Day event this weekend.
The site in Burnham Deepdale, between Hunstanton and Wells, will be homes to guard posts, an officers’ mess, barracks, and a field hospital.
Squaddies and civvies alike can enjoy a free 1940s film night on Friday evening, complete with newsreel, two features and the national anthem. Ale and gin will be on sale from Norfolk Brewhouse and food from the Wood Fired Food Co.
On Saturday, civilians can visit the Deepdale camp to meet the reenactors and learn about the war time kit. From noon, afternoon tea will be available from The Travelling Bluebird.
Ticket holders can learn to swing and jive during dance lessons with Jump Jive and Swing, interspersed with singing from May Blossom, Vintage Songbird.
Visitors can take part in a military drill, view weapon demonstrations and street theatre. Hair and make-up will be offered by Hairaid Shelter and Ken and Margaret Garner from the British Evacuees Association will be sharing their war time stories.
During the evening, ticket holders can enjoy The Daisy Belles in concert in the Brick Barn and dance the night away with their war time songs. They will be joined by DJ AndyAV8 and Arthur Howell Butchers will serve a hog roast.
Sunday will be more relaxed, starting with the reenactors parading to the war memorial. At noon there will be a weapons demonstration and throughout the day visitors can look around the displays.
The Deepdale 1940s Weekend takes place this weekend from Friday, May 11, to Sunday, May 13. Car parking is £3 in advance or £5 on the day. Tickets are £15 to see The Daisy Belles and/or the dance lessons, and includes free car parking on both days. There is discount for anyone staying at Deepdale Backpackers and Camping.
