A café in the heart of a north Norfolk town has been taken over by a local chef who previously worked at an award-winning seaside restaurant.

The Art House Café in Cromer’s High Street has reopened under new owner Johnny Grimley – a chef for more than a decade who used to work at Galton Blackiston’s Upstairs at No.1 restaurant in Cromer.

Mr Grimley, who lives in Mundesley and also worked at the Staithe ‘N’ Willow restaurant in Horning, took over The Art House Café from retiring former owners husband and wife Paul and Jill Field.

“I was a chef in cafes and restaurants in and around Cromer but I’ve always wanted to own my own place,” Mr Grimley said.

“It felt like the right time, so when the opportunity came up I decided to take it.

“The previous owners Paul and Jill have been so supportive. They came on our opening day on Saturday and introduced me to some of the cafe's regulars.

“A lot of people would’ve just handed over the keys and disappeared into the sunset but they’ve both been so helpful.

“The café will still be The Art House and we will continue to exhibit the work of local artists.”

The café is currently running a sample menu with a range of toasted and open sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes.

It is also serving freshly roasted Two Chimps Coffee.

Mr Grimley said working with the likes of chef Jimmy Preston, who was head chef at No.1 in Cromer and now owns XO Kitchen in Norwich, inspired him to take on the café.

"I've learned so much from the people I've worked with in restaurants over the years," he said.

"Working for people like that inspired me to take this opportunity."
