Cromer Tennis head coach Andrew Margarson was awarded Norfolk’s Coach of the Year award at the LTA Tennis dinner held at Sprowston Manor Hotel.

He came to Cromer from London where, amongst others, he helped coach a very young Kyle Edmund, who has gone on to achieve success, playing in the winning Davis Cup team.

Margarson has been head coach at Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club for the past year, having taken on the role from Chris Cash, and has been instrumental in introducing a new coaching programme with the help of his assistants Ross Murray and Kelvin Van Hessalt.

The number of juniors attending coaching groups has grown to over 100 and, working with North Norfolk District Council, he has introduced tennis coaching for the disabled twice a week at the club.

Margarson has taken several groups to participate in mini tennis tournaments at Easton College Tennis Centre and they have achieved notable successes, bringing home medals of all colours.

He also runs coaching groups for the club’s City League teams and organises social tennis events for club members.

Since his arrival at the club, a thriving schools programme has been implemented and Cromer Academy send classes over to the club throughout the spring and summer terms to use the tennis facilities.

Margarson’s team also visit other local schools, introducing their pupils to the sport and this has also brought juniors to the club to get coaching.

All in all, since his arrival, he has achieved excellent results from his hard work and dedication.

Club chairman Nick Amis, on holiday in France, was full of praise for the coach, saying that his hard work and dedication to the sport were well known throughout the tennis community and he thoroughly deserved this prestigious award.

Important dates for the club for this year include: County week -July 24-28 (Division Two Ladies including Norfolk); Junior week - July 31 – August 5; Senior Week - August 14–19.

All tournaments are a week later this year, so the seniors’ event coincides with Carnival week.
