Sheringham golfer Harrold set for an exciting summer

PUBLISHED: 18:14 01 May 2012

Sheringham professional William Harrold was left to reflect on the ups and downs of life as a professional golfer after making his EuroPro Tour debut last week.

Harrold found himself in a tie for sixth position after the first round of the weather-shortened Motocaddy Masters at Wensum Valley after an excellent level par round of 72.

But hopes of a high finish and a decent cheque disappeared on day two when he lost his way in miserable weather, shooting a six over par 78 to finish in a tie for 38th position to earn himself the princely sum of £247.50.

It was a disappointing way to finish an event that had started in such promising fashion –- but Harrold insists he will have plenty of positives to take with him for the rest of the season.

“After the first round I was in a position where I could have won the tournament so what happened in the second round was disappointing,” he said. “It was tough out there and I dropped a few shots. The bogeys were just bogeys and I had a double at the par three 15th which was down to a lapse in concentration.

“But overall it wasn’t a bad start, considering it was my first event on Tour. I played some good golf on the first day to make the cut, so I can take plenty of positives from that.

“I did well in qualifying so I’m going to play all of the EuroPro Tour events. Other that that I am just looking at British Open qualifying. “

On the first day the 23-year-old former Gresham’s pupil, who has only been a pro since the start of the year, shot a level par 72 to finish the first round in a tie for sixth place and only three shots behind the leader.

Heavy rain had caused a near four-hour delay on Wednesday afternoon and when play then had to be abandoned early the opening tournament of the 2012 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour was reduced from 54 holes to a 36-hole tournament.

“I played well, it was a little up and down,” said Harrold, who carded three birdies and an eagle at the par 4 13th as well as three three bogeys and a double bogey.

“I was one under through my first three which I played last night (Wednesday). When I came out this morning (Thursday) I had a couple of solid pars but hit a bit of a bad shot on six which cost me a couple of shots but other than that I played pretty well, was patient and then on the back nine I birdied 12, eagled 13 and birdied 14 to get myself to one under I then I dropped a shot on 16 to go level par.”

Harrold was certainly pleased to have dodged the worst of the weather.

“To be honest I think my group got quite lucky with the draw; of the holes we played last night we only got wet on one hole and today we were dry. It was windy but I don’t know if today’s wind was as hard as yesterday’s rain but I felt like we had fairly decent weather.”
