Bungay Town beat Acle to keep Anglian Combination promotion hopes alive

Bungay Town are maintaining their Anglian Combination promotion hopes.

Archant

Striker Dan Andrews came right back to scoring form with a hat-trick as Bungay enhanced their Anglian Combination Division Two promotion hopes with an emphatic 4-1 win at promotion rivals Acle Reserves on Saturday.

In their last home game the Black Dogs had been beaten 5-1 by the same side, but they turned the tables with one of their best performances of the season. Defence, midfield and front line all functioned well, and James Shaw in goal made impressive saves in what was an entertaining game.

For the first time this season joint managers Stu Beales and Mark Bartram were able to name an unchanged side following the 4-0 win against Hempnall Reserves and they were rewarded with a hard-working display.

Shaw did well to block an early effort at the near post as a home forward cut in at the byline, but it was the Black Dogs who took the lead in the ninth minute as Andrews blocked an intended clearance by a defender and beat the keeper with a good finish.

The home side were mobile and dangerous going forward and Steve Batt got in one timely tackle to prevent a forward breaking clear before Shaw made a fine save from a close range header and then another to thwart a forward when he broke clear.

The defensive efforts were built on in the 25th minute as Bungay won a free-kick 25 yards out and Matt Lowe drilled the ball low into the corner of the net to make it 2-0. But Acle struck back immediately as they played a quick free kick and Yaxley steered the ball past the advancing Shaw.

Stuart Campbell had a snap shot blocked by the home defence as Bungay retaliated, and James Youngman fired wide from the edge of the area. But with five minutes of the half left the Black Dogs made it 3-1 as the ball fell to Andrews on the edge of the area and he turned to fire a low left-foot shot past the keeper.

He almost completed his hat-trick as Matt James played him in but the keeper managed to block his shot.

Bungay’s task in the second half was to keep their two-goal lead – but Acle remained in the game and Shaw had to make another good save before Andrews got to the left byline and set up Youngman for a chance, only for the forward to side-foot wide.

Shaw made two more flying saves – but Bungay also looked full of goals and two minutes into added time Andrews completed a well deserved hat-trick, and took his season’s tally in double figures, as he just managed to dink the ball over the advancing keeper when Bungay again beat the offside trap.

Bungay: J Shaw, S Olley, S Batt, T York, D Lowe, M James (D Wilby), M Lowe, J Riches, S Campbell (S Raven), D Andrews, J Youngman (T Strickland).

Tomorrow Bungay travel to Mundford in Division Two.
