Dozens of oranges adorned with candles, sweets and raisins were paraded around All Saints Church, Beeston Regis, at a Christingle service held by West Runton Scout Group.

The traditional advent celebration, which dates back to the 18th century, has been raising funds for the Children’s Society since the 1960s.

West Runton Beavers, Cubs and Scouts gave readings, sang carols and read stories about children helped by the charity.

They also gave cash they had collected in Children’s Society cardboard ‘candles’ before following directions given by North Norfolk District Scout commissioner Paul Henriksen to create a Christingle – which represents the world and the fruits of the earth.

Mr Henriksen said: the Christingle service unites the spirit of Scouting with the spirit of Christmas and no matter whether they are Christian or not, our young people can see how the message of Christmas fits in with their lives.”
