A popular weekly auction due to take place today has been cancelled because of snow and ice.

The Keys general sale, which sells between 500 and 600 lots, was due to start at Keys Fine Art Auctioneers on 8 Market Place, Aylsham, at 10.30am.

Phil Barker, a partner in the firm, said this morning: “Getting onto the sale ground and getting off the sale ground is quite tricky at the moment.

“Our sale ground has had a layer of snow on what was already there so that makes it quite a tricky area. If no-one turns up you cannot sell to Scotch mist.”

He added the last time a general sale was cancelled was about five years ago, probably because of bad weather.

Items including furniture to lawn mowers are sold each week.

The sales attract more than 100 potential customers on a regular basis.

Mr Barker, who took two hours to travel from Erpingham village to Aylsham this morning, said there were not many people at the auction house on Saturday morning for the viewing session ahead of today’s event.

“If you live on a side road or in the countryside it is a nightmare,” Mr Barker said. “The staff have made valiant efforts to get into work.”

He said the parking area around the auction house was covered in compacted ice and a layer of snow but the main roads around Aylsham were OK.
