A lifeboat crew was called out to a sighting of a kayak in difficulties off the Norfolk coast - only for it to turn out to be a spear fishing diver who turned down their offer of help.

Sheringham Lifeboat was called into action just after 10am on Sunday to reports that a kayak was tied to a wreck buoy about 300 metres off Weybourne beach during moderate to heavy seas.

On arrival they found the kayak was being used as a ‘sea base’ by a diver who was spear fishing near the wreck.

The lifeboat crew suggested to the diver that he should not be at sea during ‘testing conditions’.

But despite their advice, the diver turned down assistance or to go ashore.

The lifeboat then stayed with the man until he decided to return to the beach and was escorted safely ashore.
