Three or four balaclava-wearing men, one wielding a sledgehammer, burst their way into the back of Barclays Bank, on Market Place, at about 2.20pm yesterday.

They fled empty handed a few minutes later and police believe a silver Vauxhall Astra abandoned and torched half a mile away may have been their first get-away car.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who saw the car fire in Hungate Street, opposite John of Gaunt Infant and Nursery School. It was reported shortly before 2.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Talbot, from Great Yarmouth CID, said: “We believe they then swapped to another unknown vehicle and left the area. I want to speak to anyone who witnessed the Astra being abandoned and may have information on the next vehicle used by the group to leave Aylsham.”

No money was taken during the attempted robbery, but two members of staff suffered minor injuries after being assaulted.

● Anyone with information about the car fire or the robbery should contact Great Yarmouth CID on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

  • I wonder how often those being attacked do not defend themselves through a fear of being prosecuted for using 'undue force'?
