They kept at a safe distance while teachers quizzed them on what they thought it might be.

Suggestions included the possibility that it was the moon, or a planet which had crashed to earth, but the mystery was later solved when ‘museum experts’ in London identified it as a fossilised dinosaur egg.

The discovery has created quite a buzz at the school where dinosaur studies are now all the rage in English, maths and science lessons and at home, where children are carrying out further research with their families.

The two-foot papier mache cast is on a special display table for the children to marvel at and enjoy throughout their studies which will be rounded off with a spectacular dinosaur fashion show. Pictured with the egg are, from left: Luca Dyke 5, Oliver Davison 6, and Hermione Pyle 6. Picture: ANTONY KELLY.
