A man caught driving his Audi A8 at 116mph on the A47 has told a court he has since sold the car and bought “something more sensible”.

Melvyn Trutzenbach, 45, of Heron Gardens in Stalham, was overtaking on the road at 9.07am on April 9 last year when he hit the speed.

He was convicted of speeding on January 22 of this year but had to come to court due to the excess speed involved.

At Norwich Magistrates Court on Monday he told the bench it was “only the second time” he had ever driven the vehicle and was “not yet familiar with its power”.

“I did not realise my excess of speed,” he told the court. “In 29 years of having a licence I have never been convicted of speeding.

“After considering my actions that day I decided to sell the vehicle and buy something more sensible.”

Trutzenbach was fined £1,200, with court costs of £100 and a victim surcharge of £120. His licence was endorsed with six penalty points.
