He was a National Trust volunteer for more than 30 years, and now an area of woodland has been named after John Idiens.

The mixed woodland above Town Hill in West Runton is now called the John Idiens Wood in memory of the man, who died in 2016.

Mr Idiens was volunteer manager for the National Trust for the West Runton and Beeston Regis Heath property for nearly 20 years, leading teams of volunteers in the restoration and management of heathland and woodland in the area.

In 2010 he was made an MBE for his work.

The trust’s acquisition of the woodland was made possible by a generous donation from an old school friend of Mr Idiens’s.

Earlier this month, former and present volunteers, family, friends and National Trust staff gathered in the wood to toast his memory at the woodland now named after him.

The woodland can be accessed on foot from Sandy Lane, opposite the entrance to Renwick Park.
