A champion north Norfolk farmer has retained his title as his club’s best malting barley grower.

William Mack, of Hempstead Hall, near Holt, won the supreme championship for the second year running in the annual malting barley competition at Holt and District Farmers’ Club.

His sample of Propino, which also won the spring barley competition, will be judged against the best from Stalham Farmers’ Club for the supreme inter-club championship, also won last year by Mr Mack.

Chris Borrett, of grain merchants Adams and Howling, said that there had been a total of 29 entries this year and the judge Bob King, commercial director of Crisp Malting Group, had no hesitation in picking his champion sample.

In the winter category with 16 entries, Craft topped the list with six entries, Maris Otter five and Flagon four. Laureate was the most popular spring variety with eight, while Propino and Concerto had two each.
