Two Norfolk nurseries have scooped gold awards this year at the Chelsea Flower Show.
Thorncroft Clematis in Reymerston, near Dereham, run by Peter Skeggs-Gooch and his parents Jon and Ruth Gooch, won its sixth gold medal in the Great Pavillion Awards.
Mr Skeggs-Gooch said: “It is a real joy. This year the Great Pavillion has been jam packed.”
Thorncroft was set up in 1989 and won its first gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2007.
Included in this year’s stand of 600 plants was a purple shikoo clematis, originally from Japan, which featured on the BBC One television coverage of the event last night.
Another Norfolk business which received a gold medal in the Great Pavillion awards was Peter Beales Roses, based in Attleborough.
Simon White, customer service manager for the business, said: “Everyone is really pleased. The stand is absolutely heaving. This year hasn’t been easy because of the weather. We have pulled out all the stops and it looks fantastic. You would think it would have been growing here for years.”
Richard Beales, managing director and designer of this year’s Chelsea Flower Show stand said, “It’s an honour and privilege to receive a gold medal at this prestigious show and I gladly accept it on behalf of myself and all my hard working, dedicated staff.”
Mr Beales presented the Queen with a small posy of the Queen’s Jubilee rose yesterday, especially created by the Attleborough nursery.
This flower was one of three new varieties grown by Peter Beales Roses, which featured in this year’s display.
The business has now won 19 gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show since 1989.
Bungay Flower Club won gold in the first session of the Best Floral Arrangement category.
The Arthritis Research UK Garden, designed by Thomas Hoblyn from Bardwell, near Bury St Edmunds, won the silver gilt flora award in the Most Creative Show Garden category.
