Former Cromer pier show singer Michele Summers has completed a sponsored abseil down an American skyscraper for charity.

The 65-year-old, who lives in Denver, Colorado but also has a home near Cromer, eased her way down 34 storeys dangling from a rope – wearing a pair of Mary Poppins-style bloomers.

The performer, who starred in four pier summer seasons, in 1988, ‘92, ‘96 and ‘97, has played the flying nanny in the past and dressed up in her full Mary costume before the event. But she had to swap the dress for safety gear for the 300ft descent.

Her efforts raised around $4000 at the Cancer League of Colorado’s annual Over the Edge event – and comes after she has undergone treatment for breast cancer herself.

She said: “It was a most exhilaration experience. The best advice of the day was ‘don’t look down’ which I managed to stick to.”
