Archant

Mother Nature has already flexed her muscles this morning as the region prepares for severe flooding, after fierce waves moved an ancient ship wreck further up the beach.

The wooden ‘bones’ of the Ispolen, which was driven onto Sheringham’s shores in a fierce storm in 1897, have been stripped on their sandy casing and laid bare by the wild weather.

It normally lays submerged under the sand, and winter weather will occasionally scour away enough sand for curious residents to take a peep at her ancient frame.

But this morning, as strong winds have battered north Norfolk’s coastline, her remains have been completely revealed and moved her further up the beach and onto the shingle.

Callum Ringer, Bodham parish councillor, spotted the exposed wreck and alerted North Norfolk District Council, which has an officer that deals with the artefact, to its movement.
