An unusual Victorian pleasure garden will open to the public for only the second time as part of a north Norfolk village’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Islands, at Dilham, near North Walsham, cover 25 acres but became overgrown until they were restored in recent years.

Visitors to Dilham will be able to wander through their lost world of waterways, foxgloves and rhododendrons.

Tickets will cost £5 from the village hall, under-12s free, and will go to support local and farming charities.

The event is among many in Dilham to celebrate the Jubilee, beginning on May 26 with a barn dance and barbecue in the village hall.

The hall will also be open on June 4, from 10am-4pm, with an exhibition about village history and residents are being asked to share their memories and mementoes of the coronation year for display.

Refreshments will be available, and facilities for a picnic, with live music, on the playing field.

Names of local children are being collected so that commemorative mugs can be presented and the day will finish with a beacon fire which will be lit at Dilham’s highest point.

Later in the year there are plans to plant a row of daffodils from the church towards the A149, linking with previous celebratory plantings.

  • Watch out. The "Council" might mow down the daffs and confiscate any signs. Unless there`s another agenda.......
