Hosted by the Crab & Lobster Festival, the judging will take part in Cromer in homage to the delicious delicacy which has become famous across the globe for its sweet and juicy taste.

The brainchild of Philip Search, co-owner with wife Caroline of Henry’s Coffee and Tea Store on Church Street, he hoped the event would inject fun into the seaside town.

He said: “There’s lots of us who think we’ve got the best crab sandwich in town. We want to bring visitors in and also bring the businesses together.”

Judging will take place at Evington Lawns from 2pm on Sunday, May 21. Participants are asked to bring along their sandwiches already prepared and ready to be judged. The crab meat used must be Cromer crab.

When asked what makes the perfect crab sandwich, Mr Search said he would not be giving away any of his secrets but wanted the event to bring forth the best in local produce from around Norfolk.

“Cromer is famous for its crabs and this event should be a showcase of that. Cromer crab is the star of the show and it’s what we should be shouting about. We are hoping to see lots of local ingredients.”

There have been rumours about rivalry already surfacing but Mr Search said it was all in good fun.

“The competition is open to everyone.

“I think there’s banter going around about the rivalry and about who will pull this off to become the winner but it’s all about celebrating the Cromer crab really.”

If the event is a success this year then Mr Search said new categories, such as a non-business and child’s entry, could be introduced in the future.

The surprise judges of the event will be revealed on the day.

The Crab & Lobster Festival is now in its eighth year and is hosted by both Sheringham and Cromer.
