A pharmacist is hanging up his coat after 38 years of serving communities in north Norfolk.

Scott Murray, 65, is retiring from Jhoots Pharmacy, formerly Lloyds, in Sheringham’s Station Road, where he has worked as a pharmacist since 1987.

He previously spent two years at the former Savory Moore Pharmacy in Church Street, Cromer - where he moved to from his native Scotland in 1985.

Mr Murray, who lives in Sheringham, said: “I will always hold very fond memories of the communities in both Cromer and Sheringham.

“I would like to thank everyone for all their support over the years.”

Mr Murray began working in the dispensary of David M Muir’s pharmacy in his hometown of Girvan, in Ayrshire, when he was just 14 years old in 1972.

He studied at Glasgow Strath Clyde University for four years between 1976 and 1980, going on to do a pre-registration year in industrial and hospital pharmacy in Crewe and Liverpool.

He became a registered pharmacist in 1981, starting his first community pharmacy job at Macpherson’s Chemists in the town of Saltcoats in Ayrshire.

Mr Murray later managed a small pharmacy in Kilmarnock and joined Savory and Moore – which eventually led him to Cromer.

“There’s been a lot of change in pharmacy over the years,” he said.

“The first ever ‘Ask Your Pharmacist’ campaign was in 1981. Pharmacists traditionally were just dispensers but they became an information resource to offer people advice and support.

“As well as looking back, now is a critical time to be looking forward. I would say to pharmacies, health centres, and communities that there is a firm foundation of community spirit to work with.

“Use it and build a strong Norfolk healthcare future.”

Mr Murray is retiring from Jhoots Pharmacy in Sheringham on Wednesday, November 29.
