Mums were celebrated across the country on March 19 as families came together to mark Mothering Sunday.

And two 100-year-old Aylsham mums called Shiela were treated to a special day out on the Bure Valley Railway for the occasion.

Sheila Peal and Sheila Wintle were among the passengers who stepped aboard a vintage steam train for the journey through the north Norfolk countryside from Aylsham to Wroxham and back.

They live at Aylsham Manor Care Home in Norwich Road, Aylsham, and are the mums of married couple John and Eleanor Peal, nee Wintle, who live near Cambrdige.

Eleanor said both mums were delighted to have made the journey.

She said: “We enjoyed a picnic lunch and prosecco during the stopover at Wroxham, where John’s brother joined us for lunch.

“They thoroughly enjoyed getting out and about and were chuffed to be able to see the countryside, and, in my mother's case, seeing old haunts along the way.

“Staff at the railway made us very welcome and looked after us all - and the dog - so well."

She said the railway held a special place in her mum's heart.

Eleanor said: “My father, Kyrle Wintle, was on the first Bure Valley train ride in July 1990 in his capacity as then chairman of Broadland District Council - so it is fitting that my mother had this outing now.”

Mrs Wintle has lived in Aylsham since 1957.

She said: "I first saw Aylsham in 1946 and I decided I wanted to move here, and so I did 10 years later."

The railway ran a special offer over the weekend allowing mums to travel free.

Mrs Peal and Mrs Wintle are both approaching their 101st birthday.
