Jean Hawke

Jean Hawke
Former Norwich High School student Jean trained at Norwich School of Art, where she met her future husband David, who is now a furniture designer.

After spending 10 years working as an interior designer for well-known London architects YRM Ltd, Jean took time out to concentrate on bringing up her two children before retraining as a teacher.

She then taught at a Norwich primary school for a further ten years before taking early retirement in order to concentrate on painting and looking after her family.

"From a very young age, I had always sketched, but I found that, with work and a family, it was very difficult to find the time to paint," she said.

But finding the life of an artist a lonely one, Jean then decided to work part time teaching art to adults.

"That didn't work either," she said. "I found teaching time consuming and it stopped me from concentrating on what I really wanted to do."

Five years ago, Jean decided to become a full-time artist and, since then, she has taken part in four Open Studios events. Her work, which features an eclectic mix of subjects ranging from local landmarks including Blickling Hall and Wolterton Park, to flowers and flowers and family pets, has proved popular among visitors to her website, although she is yet to find a gallery willing to take her on.

"I think the fact that I use so many different styles upsets them a bit," she says. I work with photography, pen and wash, pastels, acrylics, watercolours and oils."

Jean, who is currently working on a series of paintings of Norwich riverside, is inspired by the unique Norfolk light, and by classical buildings. "I particularly like all the architectural details, and I love painting old buildings when they start to get algae on the windows and their chimneys begin to crumble," she says.
