Karen Rowlands

Karen Rowlands
Berkshire-born Karen Rowlands developed a love of drawing, painting and sewing as a youngster.

Specialising in woven textiles, she graduated from Loughborough College of Art and Design with a first class honours degree in Art and Design and became resident weaver at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Berkshire.

Karen, whose work has been exhibited all over the country, has also worked on art projects in schools, and was a visiting lecturer at a number of art colleges.

After moving to Norfolk 20 years ago, she rented a workshop at Alby Crafts and met and married Rodney, an engineer.

The couple went on to have four children in quick succession, and although she managed to keep her hand in making dance costumes - also squeezing in the odd commission painting people's pets, relatives or homes - Karen's life as a mum of four youngsters meant that her art had to take a back seat.

But with her children now all in their teens, she decided early last year to return to work full-time. She again took a workshop at Alby Crafts, this time joined by her 16-year-old daughter Charlotte, who draws in pastel and pencil and who is also learning to use Karen's 24-shaft dobby loom.

As well as tapestry soft furnishings, Karen produces hand woven silk men's evening wear including ties and scarves.

The subjects of her oil paintings range from scenes such as Blickling Hall, Sheringham Park and Felbrigg Hall to wildlife.

"I am often inspired by the colours in my weaving or by something I see while out walking," she says.

"But what is lovely about living here is that there is so much beauty – you just turn the corner and there is something else to paint."

You can see Karen's work at Unit 9, Alby Crafts, Cromer Road, Erpingham. Phone 01263 768754. Her original paintings and prints are also on show at the Old Reading Room Gallery, Weybourne Road, Kelling.
