John Hurst
Born at Epworth, Lincolnshire, John studied fine art at the Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln.
Coming from a working agricultural family, he says spending time on his own meant his artistic instincts developed from an early age, and his love of ancient agricultural practices and folklore can be seen reflected in his work.
For the past 25 years John has worked mainly on commissions, his patrons including cricketer Ian Botham - a former neighbour - and the Earl of Yarborough, for whom he produced a series of 50 paintings featuring scenes from the earl's Lincolnshire estate, Brocklesby.
John published his autobiography, Watercolour Words, in 2000, and in 2003 completed a collection of Wesley heritage studies which formed the framework for his book, John Wesley, a Pictorial Journey.
The paintings, known as the Hurst Collection, are now owned and exhibited by the World Methodist Council at Lake Junaluska, in North Carolina, USA.
John's work has been exhibited all over the country and is held in private collections in the UK and abroad, with original paintings fetching up to £3,000.
A keen gardener, ornithologist and field sportsman, he has been visiting the North Norfolk coast to paint since 1972. He moved to Salthouse with his wife Jacqui two years ago.
"We are country people and we've always been country people, but I can't overstate the welcome we have received from Salthouse people, both from those who have always lived in the village and people who have made their home here," he said.
The couple run successful one-day ornithological sketchbook skills courses, with Jacqui providing home-cooked lunches and teas and John taking students out to Cley to study birds from hides on the National Wildlife Trust reserve.
"The environment here really lends itself to birdwatching, and, as I'm a painter and a keen birdwatcher, it seemed logical to marry the two together," he says.
Although he enjoys teaching, John's focus is still on producing original pieces and on having an annual show.
"The coast is changing so rapidly, and there are things I want to capture before they are gone," he says.
