Alison Wagstaffe

Alison Wagstaffe
Blakeney-based Alison Watstaffe was born in Liverpool. She spent time travelling through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan and India before settling in Norfolk 26 years ago, when she enrolled at Norwich School of Art.

Alison fell ill before finishing her course and was unable to continue her studies but, over the past 20 years or so, she has completed a number of art courses, the most memorable of which, she says, was a course in Shamanic art in Denmark.

As part of her recovery from illness, Alison has explored various complementary therapies, and has herself been a practising therapist for 15 years.

From her garden studio with its view of Blakeney Point, she makes prints influenced by her love of Greece and by dreams, stories and poetry.

"Printmaking is a technique beloved of artists like me who love drawing," she says. "I draw all the time, I have always drawn; it is my fist language."

Angels, mermaids and mythological figures make regular appearances in Alison's brightly-coloured, gold leaf-adorned prints and, while she points out that, in some cultures, mermaids have a bad reputation, in Greece, she says, they are seen quite differently.

"Mermaids are often seen as beautiful sirens luring sailors to their doom. "But in Greece they are seen as the guides of seafarers, and in some countries they are known as the angels of the sea, so I'm going with this story!

"Some people say my pictures are icon-like, but that sounds a bit grand to me," she said. "But I do think I've been unconsciously influenced by Greek art - I love Greece and go there whenever I can - at the moment, there is a permanent exhibition of my work in a restaurant in the Kolonaki district of Athens."
