Wolfgang Altmann
Born near Dusseldorf, Wolfgang studied English literature and semiology at university in Bochum, west-central Germany, before spending a number of years working as a research assistant.
While still in Germany, he met American jewellery-maker Quay Proctor-Mears, British ceramic artist Barbara Widdup, and German potter Gunni Espelage, and the group started an artists' workshop.
In 1984, the four artists decided to move to North Norfolk and teamed up with potters Richard Kelham, Rosalind Redfern, Christiane Gunther and Mary Perry to open Made in Cley pottery and gallery in what was once the village store.
Wolfgang, who has been painting landscapes since he was a child, produces art prints based on original oil paintings and air-brushed watercolour paintings, also using computer-generated graphics.
He makes pots and sculptures in marble, stone and slate, and his photographs, which are taken with a state-of-the-art, 17 megapixel digital camera, focus on the coastline and the sea.
"When I am out on my bike with a camera, I am inspired by the North Norfolk landscape," he says. "It is unspoiled and it is where I feel most at home." Prints, sculptures and photographs by Wolfgang Altmann are on show at Made in Cley, High Street, Cley. Tel: 01263 740124. You can also see more of his work at www.madeincley.co.uk
