Temperatures of just over four degrees in the North Sea by the coast failed to put off intrepid charity swimmers on yesterday.

About 300 spectators turned out to watch about a dozen people compete in a competition to launch themselves as far as possible off the quay at Blakeney into the chilly water raising £1,000 for charity.

To add to the entertainment one competitor dressed in a full cow suit and another, Tom Curtis, launched himself into the sea on his bicycle - winning him a bottle of champagne and a t-shirt for his effort.

Organiser Sam Curtis, brother of the winner and a maths and rugby teacher at Greshams in Holt, said it was a successful event, raising about £1,000 for the Blakeney Twelve charity.

It is a charity formed about 50 years ago and run by 12 local men in Blakeney to give aid to older people and people in need in the village.

Also taking part was Mr Curtis' wife, Emma Curtis, his sister Sally Hawkins and his brother's girlfriend as well as his brother in law Tom Kay.

Spectators also enjoyed a barbeque and mulled wine. The dip at Blakeney is held on or near New Year's day depending on the tides.
